Friends of Sudbury Seniors Cultural Trips 2011-12
The 1st Friend's Fall cultural trip of 2011-2012 is to the Adams National Historic Park in Quincy, MA on October 4, 2011. We will visit the birthplaces of not one but two U.S. presidents - John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams. "Peacefield", the Adams' mansion, also served as the summer White House to both presidents and home to generations of their descendants. After the tour, we will return to the Senior Center for lunch and discussion.
If you have a National Park Senior Pass, please bring it along.
The cost of $40.00 includes lunch. The bus departs from the Sudbury Senior Center promptly at 9:30 a.m.
Reservations may be made at the Senior Center. Checks should be written to Sudbury Senior Activities and presented when the reservation is made.
Additional trips are yet to be determined. Suggestions are welcome. Please contact us with any you have.
Fall Art Series: On Wednesday, October 5 at 1:30pm, Donald Oasis will start the Fall art series. The Fall offering will chronicle the rise of Cultural Nationalism from the Hudson River School of painting to the works of Norman Rockwell. After the American Revolution, traditional religion lost many followers. America came to assert its cultural independence from Britain. This style of art became distinctively and singularly American in taste. The "new" American Cultural Nationalism was not only in the form of paintings but also in literature and music. Noah Webster, James Fenimore Cooper, Walt Whitman and Washington Irving were some of the authors involved. The 7 artists who will receive the most attention are George Caleb Bingham, William Sidney Mount, Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, Eastman Johnson, Reginald Marsh, and Norman Rockwell. Two lectures, the 3rd and 4th, will highlight the subtle changes in art, music, literature, photography, and sculpture which culminated in changing the American character.
We will rely on several art historians, such as Simon Schama and Barbara Novak. We will use their theme that "Landscape was Culture before it was Nature". I hope to prove that this was so in other counties such as Germany and England to just name a few.
There will be handouts in each lecture outlining the material presented on that day as well as references used. All distinctively art terms will be defined.
Please come with open minds and be prepared to learn.
The course starts Wednesday October 5 at 1:30 pm and runs on consecutive Wednesdays except for October 19th. The fee is $30 payable to Sudbury Senior Activities.
